5 Signs of Auto Electric Problems

Your car depends on its electrical charge to power many different systems. If you have a weak battery, failing alternator or some other sort of electrical problem, you will experience problems. You may not even be able to start your vehicle at all.

Here are some signs of auto electric issues, according to the Fairbanks auto repair specialists at Simard Automotive:

1. Vehicle Won't Start

A surefire sign of a dead battery is when the vehicle won't start at all. You can usually tell when you turn the key in the ignition or hit the START button and it makes no sound at all (maybe just an odd click or two). This likely means there is no electrical power at all. If you hear and feel the engine trying to turn over, you may have power. You could just have a low battery, wiring malfunction or mechanical damage that could include the starter, the spark plugs, the fuel system or the engine itself.

2. Smoke or Burning Smells

You can usually tell the difference between smoke and steam coming from under your hood. Neither are a good sign. Steam usually implies the engine overheating while smoke can be an electrical problem such as a wire shorting out or something else that you will want to have looked at by a mechanic as soon as possible. Any time you see or smell something burning in your car, it's cause for concern.

3. Electronics Malfunctions

You may notice that your power windows, door locks, stereo system, GPS or other electronic components are acting up or malfunctioning. This is a common sign of auto electric problems or a weak battery that can't provide enough power to everything at once. If it is one piece of equipment that is continually acting strange, it may just be that specific piece of electronics or its wiring connection.

4. Dim Headlights or Interior Lights

Another common electrical issue is when the headlights, tail lights or interior lights seem to be dimmer than usual. This means the battery power is weak. The battery should probably need to be replaced or recharged before it dies completely.

5. Corroded Battery Terminals

If you look at the car battery and there is a lot of corrosion around the terminals, you will want to take care of it. In many cases, the corrosion can be cleaned off and the connections retightened. In other cases, this corrosion is a sign of other problems that should be addressed.

These are just some of the most common signs of auto electric and car battery problems.
