Your tires grip the road and help provide a smooth, safe drive. With Alaska's unpredictable weather and road conditions, it's very important to take care of your tires. If they need to be replaced, it should not be something you put off for very long.  Here are some of the key things to keep in mind when maintaining your tires: 1. Check the Tire Tread Depth The obvious sign you need new tires is that the tread depths are getting dangerously low (in other words, they're going bald). If the tread depth is less than 1/16 inch, they are really low and should be replaced immediately. You can use the "penny test" by sticking an upside-down penny in the middle of the tread.
