Is it Time to Replace Your Engine Air Filter?

How often you need to change out your engine’s air filter will depend on a variety of factors. Standard maintenance steps like oil changes and tire rotations are typically easier for people to remember because they are based on predictable mileage intervals. An air filter may last longer in some vehicles than it does in others.

Checking Your Air Filter

The general rule of thumb is that you should check your air filter with every service visit. If you know how to access it, you can also check it at home from time to time. If it shows any signs of damage (cracking, holes, deteriorated rubber seal) then it’s definitely time to replace it with a new one. If it is extremely dirty, that’s another sign that you are due for new air filter. For the most part, it will be somewhere between 15,000 and 30,000 miles for each engine air filter replacement.

Other factors that will affect your air filter include how old the vehicle is, the air quality where you drive, the climate and several other things that can cause it to wear out more quickly.

The Benefits of a Clean Air Filter

The reason for maintaining a clean air filter is simple. Your engine needs oxygen to burn fuel in the combustion chamber. If dirt, debris, grease and other contaminants get in, the combustion process won’t work as efficiently and other internal engine damage can occur. In addition, a dirty air filter will restrict the flow of oxygen to the engine and that’s not good either. Essentially, a healthy air filter keeps out the nasty stuff and helps keep your engine running well.

The air filter will help your engine’s performance and can also affect fuel efficiency, so check it often and replace it as needed. When getting a replacement, consult your owner’s manual or talk with someone at a local auto repair or auto parts shop who can make sure and help you find the proper filter. They come in all different shapes and sizes. If the one you buy doesn’t fit perfectly where it is supposed to go under the hood, then it is not the right filter. Don’t try to force it in or drive with the wrong filter because that will probably only end up making things worse.
