How is Your Suspension Holding Up?

No matter what time of year it is, you depend on your vehicle's suspension system more than you might realize. Like the brakes, wheels and tires, a healthy suspension is key to vehicle performance and safety. If your suspension is weak or the springs, shocks or struts are damaged in any way, your car or truck won't handle properly and that can be very dangerous.

Common Signs of Suspension Problems

We've talked before about signs of suspension problems, but let's review some of them again:

Car is Drifting Off to One Side - When the car pulls hard to one side or the other, it is likely a wheel alignment issue. It could be the suspension, though. If it drifts offline (especially when cornering), then there's a good chance it is a suspension problem.

Bumpy Ride - Obviously, there could be a suspension issue if it seems like you are feeling every single little bump in the road or there is a lot of vibration when driving on a relatively smooth road surface.

Front End Lurch - If the vehicle's front end lurches forward when you come to a stop, then it usually means your front suspension is getting weak. The opposite can be said if the car leans backwards when accelerating from a stop. Then there could be a rear suspension concern.

Uneven Tire Treads - Again, this could be a wheel alignment issue, but severely uneven tire tread wear is also a common sign of suspension problems.

Greasy Shocks or Struts - If you are able to look under your vehicle and see that the shocks or struts are really greasy or dirty, it could signify there is a hydraulic fluid leak or something else to be concerned about with your suspension system.
