If the engine is the heart of your car, then the transmission is the brain. It transfers power from the engine to the wheels and controls speeds based on which gear the vehicle is in. If your transmission is not performing well, it is a major problem. Having your transmission rebuilt or replaced (let alone damage to other automotive components and systems) is not cheap.
At the first sign of transmission trouble, you should seek help from an automotive repair expert who can properly diagnose the issue and get it fixed before it develops into a significant (and expensive) problem. Here are some “symptoms” you can look for:
1. Unusual Noises
You may hear whining, humming or clunking coming from your vehicle. There’s a good chance it’s your transmission, especially if you hear these sounds when the vehicle is shifting to the next gear or when driving at high speeds.
2. Burning Smell
Burning transmission fluid has kind of a sweet odor that is pretty distinctive compared to oil or other fluids. If you ever smell anything burning in your car, get it checked out immediately.
3. Transmission Fluid Leaks
Transmission fluid is generally bright red in color, making it easy to identify if you happen to notice any leaks. Transmission fluid leaks are never a good sign, so waiting to have it inspected is not a good idea.
4. Slow Response
Whether your transmission is manual or automatic, you usually know how the vehicle should feel when driving. If it seems sluggish, unresponsive or not very smooth when shifting between gears, it’s likely a transmission problem.
5. Grinding Gears
If you have a vehicle with a manual transmission, grinding the gears may be your own fault if you aren’t shifting smoothly. Of course, that can wear out the clutch and transmission components more over time. If you hear grinding gears in an automatic vehicle, it’s definitely an issue to have looked at by a professional mechanic.
6. Dashboard Warning Lights
Whether it’s your check engine light or another specific to your transmission pressure/temperature that comes on, you want to have diagnostic tests and an inspection performed on your car as soon as you can.
